The most notable dance in Murcia is La parranda:
La parranda is a traditional dance from Murcia and its surrounding countryside, considered one of the region’s cultural symbols. Although it was very popular in the 19th century, today it is primarily performed as a show dance.
Its origins are unclear, but it is associated with folk festivals and celebrations, and it has become established as a typical dance of Murcia.
The music is performed by a rondalla, using instruments such as the guitar, the lute, and the bandurria, along with tambourines and castanets (called postizas). The singing is cheerful and usually deals with everyday themes.
The steps are simple and dynamic, based on the “paso de parranda” and simple movements called “pasás.” There is also a more complex version, the parranda bolera, featuring jumps and turns.
Traditional attire reflects rural life: men wear zaragüel, a shirt, a vest, and a montera, while women wear colorful skirts, mantillas, and elaborate hairstyles.
Footwear is usually espadrilles (esparteñas) or high heels on special occasions.
Notable accessories include castanets, as well as decorative elements typical of the vegetable garden that enhance the festive atmosphere.
