Extremadura

The most notable dance in Extremadura is the El Candil dance:

The El Candil dance is a tradition from Extremadura dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, originating from the cultural blend between Spain and Portugal. It evolved from a Portuguese fado (fado batido) that became faster and more lively in the border region. Its name comes from the nighttime gatherings lit by oil lamps.

It is a lively dance with somewhat complex choreography and characteristic steps, such as stomping the feet on the ground.

The music is performed with instruments like the accordion, flute, and guitar, accompanied by singing.

The attire is traditional and simple, inspired by folk clothing: costumes, shirts, pants, and the apron worn by women.

The most important accessory is the oil lamp, which was used during the dance and holds symbolic and social significance.

It is a festive dance that reflects the cultural identity and tradition of the region.
