Cantabria

The most notable dance in Cantabria is Los Picayos:

Los Picayos is a traditional religious dance from Cantabria, Spain, with very ancient origins dating back to medieval folk art. It is performed in honor of saints or virgins as an expression of devotion and a form of community celebration.

Its origins have been documented since at least the 16th century, and its name may derive from the “picada” or rhythmic style of playing or singing.

The music combines vocals, tambourines (played by women), and castanets (used by men), creating a distinct and solemn rhythm.

The dancers organize themselves in rows or in a procession, performing elegant movements, jumps, and a characteristic figure called “rosqueo,” in which they raise their arms and jump in unison.

There are two main forms: the dance, performed in small spaces such as churches, and the procession dance, performed in processions accompanying the saint.

Women wear skirts, blouses, and scarves or adornments, while men wear simple clothing consisting of a shirt, a red sash, and a scarf.

Footwear is typically white espadrilles tied with ribbons.

Accessories include tambourines decorated with ribbons and bells, as well as traditional jewelry and festive elements that reinforce the dance’s religious and cultural character.
